Working together with Burke Rehab Hospital, their staff and clients has been an amazing experience. From their top SCI doc, Dr. Stampas, to their PT’s, OT’s and Recreation Therapists, everyone is committed to seeing their patients make progress in their physical capabilities, emotional well-being and social interactions. One recent event that Push to Walk participated in was one of the hand cycle clinics that Burke hosted in conjunction with Helen Hayes Hospital , and it was great!

A variety of equipment vendors were there and had bikes for people to try, lots of volunteers to help and great food. At Push to Walk, we love getting clients to consider hand cycling as a complement to our exercise program, and have brought several newcomers into the sport. With so many choices of bikes, it is important to try a few different styles to see what is more comfortable and easy for you to use. We can also tailor your workouts to include specific exercises that will help you become stronger and make cycling more enjoyable.

Using a hand cycle can not only be a great way to exercise, but a fun and social activity with friends and family, too. While you may not think October is the time to think about an outdoor sport, you may want to start looking into different models, talk with people who ride, and start considering your options for the spring. There are several events that would be great to train for, especially Team Push to Walk’s participation in the NJ Marathon/Half Marathon on May 5, 2013, and the annual Richard West 5 Mile ride on Long Beach Island in June.

We are already signing up team members for the May Marathon, and would love to recruit hand cyclists and more runners, too! All funds raised are used for client scholarships at Push to Walk. Hi Everyone,

Here we are mid-week already for our week-long Summer Camp, and I feel like we’re just getting started! Our campers are enjoying activities with current clients, former clients, prospective clients, families and friends! I always like seeing when our events officially “end,” and people are talking to one another, sharing stories, showing others their accessible vehicles, and just hanging out. This, to me, is PRICELESS and exactly what I hoped our camp would accomplish.

Our campers tell me they are loving their workouts, and while they are tired afterwards, they are energized and excited about what they are doing! Hopefully this week will help each person reach new goals and strive for more!

We are so grateful for all the support and donations we have received so far to help make our Summer Camp a success! For starters, thanks to Scott Chesney (www.scottchesney.com) and Curly’s Ice Cream in Riverdale for a great Ice Cream Social on Sunday. Thanks to Laurie Kammer and David McCauley (www.riseupgallery.com) and the Riverdale Art Center (www.riverdaleartcenter.org) for teaming up to host a wonderful Art Workshop on Monday night. Thanks also to Steve and Laurie Colella (Colella’s Pizza, Willowbrook Mall, Wayne, NJ) for donating a delicious lunch on Tuesday that provided food for clients, guests and even the rugby players Tuesday night! Speaking of rugby, the NY Warriors Quad Rugby Team put on a fun exhibition at the Wayne YMCA. Campers and clients (even staff!) had a great time playing and learning about the game. Several of the rugby players traveled quite a distance, and we really appreciate their interest in being part of our camp activities.

At this past weekend’s Sports and Recreation Expo held at Helen Hayes Hospital, there were a number of vendors there with wheelchairs, vehicles, sports equipment and other information and resources. It was a great combination of products and services for people with spinal cord injuries and lots of other disabilities. Some of the vendors provide equipment that would be considered “medically necessary” like wheelchairs and lift systems if a person cannot transfer him or herself. I consider driving a neccessity, but that is my own opinion. In the eyes of the funders or government systems, it is quite difficult and time consuming to get funds to either purchase a vehicle or have it modified with hand controls and other adaptive equipment. Then there’s all the “extra” kinds of equipment that are definitely not covered by insurance or other programs, but have the potential of providing exercise, recreation and social activities. That’s what I’ll focus on here today. (I do acknowledge and understand that there are many other financial challenges as well. I do not mean to neglect them, but just focusing on one area today.)

One of our Push to Walk clients attended the Expo and saw some really cool stuff. After mentioning how he’d love to have one of the things he saw, he quickly acknowledged that the price tag was beyond his means. First, it seems like “stuff” for people with disabilities is just so darn expensive. As soon as something is described as helping people with disabilities, the price tag goes up considerably. For people that are handy and creative, they often build or rig something up for themselves that works just as good if not better than a product they could buy. This happens way too often, and it upsets me. I don’t know the business of manufacturing and distribution, but I do know equipment is very expensive and customer service is lacking in many, many companies who provide products to people with disabilities.

For sports and recreation equipment, there are a few resources that are worth checking out for individuals who want to buy their own stuff. I know there are requirements and guidelines for applying, but with persistence and some hard work, you might just find funding to help you. Check out the Travis Roy Foundation (www.travisroyfoundation.org), the Kelly Brush Foundation (www.kellybrushfoundation.org), The Challenged Athletes Foundation (www.challengedathletesfoundation.org) and Freedom on Wings of Sport (www.wingsofsport.com). Maybe one of these will fit your needs and you can apply for funding. Also HelpHOPELive, formerly NTAF (www.helphopelive.org) can help you set up a fundraising plan to assist you in your efforts.

While these approaches may be time consuming and tricky to navigate, it might be worthwhile in the long run. Check them out so you can go out there and have some fun. Let me know how it goes. I’ll be waiting to hear from you!

The more I read and learn about exercise for people with spinal cord injuries, the more I realize it’s really no different than exercise in general. Yes, there are special considerations and complications that one might want to prevent or try to offset, but exercise for everyone is so important!

In this month’s “Life in Action” magazine (one of my favorite publications put out by NSCIA and United Spinal for everything related to disabilities – www.spinalcord.org), there are articles on Diet & Exercise. There are some really helpful pointers and comments on various eating styles/diets, and some good references, too.

The adjoining article talks about a weight loss program with a sidebar on a home exercise setup. All good, useful and helpful info. Check it out!

The other part of my message is that consistency is an important part of the equation. Like so many other aspects of our life, if you are disciplined and stick to a program to reach a goal, it will be easier, quicker and more successful. Find out what helps you stay consistent – forming habits, having a buddy, scheduling and time of day – and stick with a plan!

That’s what we see at Push to Walk with our most successful clients, and that’s what I have seen in my personal life as well. In fact, part of my reason I am writing this today is reinforcing all of this for myself, as well. I need to be more diligent in my own exercise program, and I need to set a new goal or two to accomplish. I know this is what works for me. What works for you?

Hi Everyone,

Today, I thought I would pass along two items that might be of interest to you:

Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, NY is hosting Gary Karp to speak on Wednesday, April 4 (tomorrow!) at 5:30 pm. This is a FREE presentation! Gary is an internationally recognized public speaker, corporate trainer, facilitator, author and editor. He has been living – fully – with a T12 spinal cord injury since 1973 when he was injured in a fall from a tree at the age of 18.  Gary’s presentation will offer up insights and lessons on the nature of how we cope with trauma, the cultural assumptions that influence our view of disability, radical changes in mobility and public access since his injury, and much, much more. Another program also offered tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4 is a FREE online webinar hosted by the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). It will start at 1:30 pm and last for 75 minutes. The EEOC Speaks: Reasonable Accommodation Under the ADAAA
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to get answers to your reasonable accommodation questions directly from EEOC Commissioners. During this webinar, Commissioners Chai Feldblum and Victoria Lipnic will discuss an employer’s duty to provide reasonable accommodation to individuals with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended by the ADAAA. In addition to addressing questions submitted in advance of the session, they will cover:

  • Who is entitled to a reasonable accommodation?
  • When must an employer engage in the interactive process?
  • Employer obligations regarding:
    • job restructuring
    • modified work schedules or locations
    • leave
    • reassignment
  • What is required for an employer to show undue hardship?
